“SOFT FACTORY”

Soft Factory is an outward facing soft manufacturing and recycling space designed using a temporary, kit-of-parts approach. At Soft Factory, the line between consumer and employee is blurred as the public is invited in to become active participants in the design and manufacturing of eco-friendly and affordable furnishings. Material approach includes extensive use of OSB/textile composite and prefabricated CLT panels. Standard cuts and bolted connections are used to ensure material integrity after disassembly to extend the life of the materials past the life-span of the building. The main goal of the project is to increase transparency in the manufacturing process and engage the public to participate in production and design which is achieved through the use of vibrant color atypical of traditional manufacturing spaces and by the dynamic warehouse wall that opens up and cantilevers out to create a public maker-space on the second floor and reveal the back end of the manufacturing process to passersby.
